Can you imagine a modern highway,
curving it's way across rolling hills, through valleys and over bridges, but without any signs to show where you are heading,or where you must turn to find your destination? How would you like to be travelling on such a highway, not knowing where you are going or where to take a turnoff, or even knowing where the highway ends? We can only imagine what such a highway would be like and the chaos that travellers will find on it.
Some who travel on it may even be satisfied that they are making progress even if they do not know where they are going! Yet, such is the highway of life for many people all over the world today, a highway that is well constructed with a good foundation and proper engineering, but without any roadsigns or other indicators. ARE YOU ON A HIGHWAY OF YOUR OWN MAKING AND NOT KNOWING WHERE IT GOES OR WHERE IT ENDS? You could be on such a highway and possibly not be fully aware of it, so stop and think for a moment and say to yourself "Where am I going in life, and where will it end?" Or perhaps you have asked the question "What is the meaning of life and why am I on this earth?"
Here are some answers to your questions and some roadsigns to show you where you are going. We get these from the Holy Bible, the written Word of God. Each quotation or roadsign has an address where you may find it for yourself if you have a Bible so let's follow the roadsigns. Proverbs 14 verse 12..."There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death". Is death the only purpose that God created you and me for? Surely the God who created the universe had a greater purpose in creating men and women? Would you agree that God created man to LIVE rather than DIE?
Here's another roadsign. Romans 6 verse 23..."For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord". This roadsign points in 2 directions, one to death and the other to life. Men and women are on the highway to death because of SIN in their lives, but let us look in the other direction that leads to LIFE. In this instance we are talking about SPIRITUAL death and SPIRITUAL LIFE, not the physical life and death that all people are subject to. Here's another roadsign found in John 10 verse 10(b) "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the FULL"
These are the words of Jesus Christ who also said on another occasion and with another roadsign in John 14 verse 6..."I am the WAY and the TRUTH and the LIFE. No-one comes to the Father except through me". Can you see that the roadsigns we are talking about are pointing us to GOD and His Son, Jesus Christ, as we travel on the highway of life? Surely it makes good sense to look for roadsigns on a highway where you have not found any before, and to follow the signs that point us to ETERNAL LIFE. Here's another roadsign, this time from Romans 10 verse 9 "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved". Now you may ask the question "Saved from what?" We can be saved from the condemnation of God who will condemn us to eternal separation from Gods presence because of our sins when we appear before Him at the end of our earthly life. You may think that you are not a sinner, but another roadsign comes into view in Romans 3 verse 23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God".
The little word "ALL" on the roadsign means you and me and everybody else on the highway of life, therefore it is important that we take note of this roadsign and follow it so that we do not fall short of the glory (favour) of God. We have only given a few roadsigns on the highway of life, but there are many, many more in the Bible. Here is another roadsign before you read the Bible for yourself, and this time we go to Hebrews 4 verse 12 & 13 where the Bible speaks about itself "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account".
Do you now see that the highway of life does not have to be without roadsigns, but that God has placed many signs in strategic places so that we may find the way to HIM? Confess that you are a sinner, tell God that you are sorry for breaking his rules and accept His offer of ETERNAL LIFE at the close of your earthly life. I must end this little talk with you but cannot do so without just one more roadsign...you won't mind will you?
In John 10 verse 11 Jesus Christ says "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep" Why not trust and follow the Good Shepherd who leads the way and knows the way on the highway of life? Remember...Jesus Christ said "I AM THE WAY..." Your fellow traveller on the highway of life.
